Pertemps are delighted to be working with our valued public sector client to recruit a Laboratory Technician on a temporary basis.

Role: Laboratory Technician
Location: Edinburgh East (Seafield – Scientific Services)
Working Hours: 08:30 – 17:00 (36 hours per week) – typical days off are Thursday and Friday
Pay Rate: £16.07 per hour
Duration: Temporary, ongoing
Start Date: ASAP

About the Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build or develop a career in laboratory science, particularly within microbiology. You’ll gain hands-on experience working in a professional lab environment, supporting essential testing processes that contribute to public health and safety.

Working as part of a collaborative microbiology team, you’ll play a key role in ensuring samples are prepared, processed, and recorded accurately while maintaining high laboratory standards.

Key Responsibilities
In this varied and practical role, your duties will include:
    • Preparing food and water samples for microbiological testing
    • Accurately recording data and maintaining laboratory records
    • Organising and transferring samples to appropriate storage areas
    • Monitoring and maintaining stock levels (glassware, chemicals, consumables)
    • Cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment, benches, and workspaces
    • Ensuring safe disposal of samples in line with procedures
    • Supporting the wider team to meet testing deadlines and service targets
    • Assisting with general laboratory operations and additional tasks as required
    • Providing occasional delivery/collection support for samples if needed

What We’re Looking For
We’re more interested in your attitude and approach than extensive experience. The ideal candidate will have:
    • A degree in Microbiology or a related scientific discipline (preferred but not essential)
    • Previous laboratory experience (preferred but not required)
    • Strong attention to detail and a methodical working style
    • Good organisational and record-keeping skills
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
    • A proactive, reliable attitude and willingness to learn
    • Flexibility to work weekends as part of a 5-day rota (essential)
