Job Description
The purpose of the role is to drive performance, and directly impact pollution reduction, one of the top three deliverables for Thames Water.
Our environmental performance is monitored and evaluated by our regulators using a range of measures, such as our compliance with our environmental permits, and the number and severity of pollutions incidents that we cause, which in turn informs our Environmental Performance Assessment (EPA).
As the Environmental Liaison Manager you will provide technical oversight and management of receiving and processing the Environment Agency pollution reporting system (NIRS), including the evaluation of the pollution challenge processes.
Coordination of local regulatory engagement forums, ensuring that we build and maintain effective relationships with our local Environment Agency teams and across our wider business. Management of key business output delivery, internal reporting, H&S, and people management. Delivering improvements to business processes through a directly managed team and engagement with wider business functions.
What you will be doing as a Environmental Liaison Manager
- Providing technical oversight of the team’s pollution incident reports, that they have interpreted scientific reports and data whilst ensuring that the team are hitting their targets and timescales.
- This role includes being the business owner of the NIRS database from the EA, and the associated reporting and assurance checks.
- Lead the team, including recruiting, training and development of their career paths, keep the team informed of changing regulations and implement changes to ways of working to stay compliant.
- Work closely and collaborate with the serious pollution investigations team, to ensure that business processes support the company ability to understand and coherently evidence, environmental pollution incidents in line with EA guidance and expectations.
- Feed into evidencing business-wide activity from frontline operational teams, contractor organisations, and the control room processes are effective in the goal of accurately reflecting pollution incidents.
- Providing feedback to other business areas through training, presentations and reports to ensure that environmental incidents are managed and responded to appropriately
- Engaging and liaising with the Environment Agency; chairing monthly pollution review meetings, quarterly local area liaison meetings and pollution challenge meetings.
- Collaborating within the team and wider business and feeding into discussions around pollution reduction initiatives.
- Coaching and supporting others in your own area of expertise.
- A passion to improve our environmental performance.
- Experience of delivering work through others, ideally with direct line management experience.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written (e.g. report writing, using neutral, factual language suitable for a regulator.
- Deliver exceptional service through an enthusiastic, positive and proactive approach, taking initiative and accountability for your role while working accurately within a busy team.
- Excellent planning & organisation skills, with the ability to balance different workstreams and achieve statutory deadlines.
- Excellent IT literacy, including good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Degree or higher-level qualification in an environmental or science discipline (or equivalent)
- Full UK Driving licence.
